What is the vaginal mesh?
The vaginal mesh products are made of Polypropylene. This was first developed in the 1950s as a thermoplastic polymer resin of propylene and is made from petroleum. Polypropylene may be molded or extruded into many forms, including fibers for suture material, specially produced mesh and nonwoven sheet applications. Nonwoven polypropylene fabric later began to be extruded from polymer melts rather than from fibers.
What is your vaginal mesh made of ?
Polypropylene Knitted Mesh (PPKM) fabrics are comprised of monofilament yarns, which are engineered for the manufacturing of textile fabrics. The polymer and manufacturing processes that are used produce fabrics with properties that are ideally suited for the manufacturing of medical device applications. Medical applications include hernia mesh patches, stress urinary incontinence (SUI) slings, and vaginal prolapse suspenders.
Nonwoven polypropylene fabric has been used for similar applications. Vaginal prolapse is like a hernia. Surgeons often repair abdominal hernias with a mesh, since the repair has been proven to be sturdier.
Problems with polypropylene fabrics have led to warnings being issued for various products made from nonwoven material and in some cases, the manufacturers have stopped marketing the products
According to adverse reports submitted to the FDA from nine different manufacturers, more than 1,000 people have suffered severe complications from surgical mesh implants. The reports include infection, pain, urinary problems and bowel, bladder or blood-vessel perforations. The repaired prolapse may have recurred or incontinence increased. Additional surgeries to remove mesh have been required because of vaginal erosion.
What does the vaginal mesh do? What is vaginal and Uterine prolapse?
Vaginal prolapse is the descent of the bladder, uterus, small bowel or rectum into the vagina. Often a “bulge” is seen or palpated. vaginal prolapse is the result of childbirth, hysterectomy and the natural aging process.
The Types of Vaginal Prolapse
During pelvic organ prolapse, the internal structures that support the pelvic organs such as the bladder, uterus, and bowel drop from their normal position and “prolapse” into the vagina. Pelvic organ prolapse surgery can be performed through the abdomen or vagina with stitches or surgical mesh to reinforce the repair and correct the a problem. Surgical mesh is also widely used in hernia repairs and to treat stress incontinence.
Traditionally physicians have used sutures to sew weakened tissues back together. Sometimes, a piece of graft material (man-made or natural tissue) can be used to reinforce these repairs.
In 2010, there were at least 100,000 pelvic organ prolapse repairs that used surgical mesh, and about 75,000 of these were transvaginal. These are the only procedures that the new FDA mesh warning applies to.
