Vaginal prolapse repair improves quality of life, with or without mesh, according to a study published in the January issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

TUESDAY, Dec. 27 (HealthDay News) — Vaginal prolapse repair improves quality of life, with or without mesh, according to a study published in the January issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Andrew I. Sokol, M.D., from the Washington Hospital Center in Washington D.C., and colleagues compared the 12-month outcomes of vaginal prolapse repair with and without mesh. A total of 65 women with stage ≥2 vaginal prolapse were randomized to receive vaginal repair with mesh (32 women) or without mesh (traditional repair; 33 women). Participants were followed-up for 12 months after trial stoppage for mesh exposures. Vaginal prolapse of stage ≤1 at 12 months was the primary outcome of the study. Quality of life and complications were the secondary outcomes.

The investigators found that, at 12 months, there were no statistically significant differences in the pelvic organ prolapse-quantification test, with similar recurrence rates for both groups. There was an improvement in the quality of life, which did not differ between the groups; cure of bulge symptoms was reported by 96.2 and 90.9 percent of participants in the mesh versus traditional groups, respectively. In the mesh group, 15.6 percent of participants had mesh exposures and reoperation rates were higher.

"Objective and subjective improvement is seen after vaginal prolapse repair with or without mesh. However, mesh resulted in a higher reoperation rate and did not improve one-year cure," the authors write.

One author disclosed financial ties with Gynecare. The Prolift mesh kits used in this study were donated by Ethicon Women's Health and Urology, Somerville, N.J.
