Many women cannot have sexual intercourse as a result of this mesh surgical procedure which can effect the stability of a marriage. Others canot drive a car any longer,visit and play with their grandchildren or take part in the joys of life the mesh was promised to help with.

What was supposed to be a simple surgery to relieve bloating and constipation turned into a living nightmare for Linda Gross, 46, of Watertown, S.D.

Gross experienced pelvic organ prolapse, a condition in which the organs of the pelvis begin to shift because of a weakened pelvic wall. Her doctor implanted Gynecare Prolift, a relatively new type of surgical mesh, into her pelvic wall through incisions made in her vagina.

Ever since that implantation in 2006, Gross says she has had urinary complications, constant pain and swelling as her body continues to reject the mesh. She says she can't sit for more than 20 minutes, she can't have sex with her husband, she can't be active for more than a few minutes at a time. Twelve surgeries have failed to remove all the mesh or relieve her pain and swelling.

"It's horrible. There are unknown amounts of the mesh still in me. I have extreme pain. It feels like the inside of my vaginal wall is on fire," Gross told ABCNews.com. "I wouldn't wish this on anyone."

Urinary problems

There have also been reports of recurring prolapse, vaginal scarring, vaginal shrinkage, and emotional problems related to the mesh. These complications often result in a patient requiring additional treatment, including surgery and further hospitalization.

The mesh helped keep the organs in place, but indications are that it harmed more than it helped. Some women who had the surgery using it have reported "painful sexual intercourse, infections, urinary problems, overall discomfort, and bleeding, usually from the mesh eroding through the stitched tissue or from skin contracting tightly around it." Last year, 75,000 women had the vaginal form of the corrective surgery, and in the past two years, adverse event reports to the FDA have quintupled.

The FDA has also received reports that three women died in connection with the surgery, and several other women are suing the device makers. One of their lawyers, who represents 75 patients, told the Globe, "It is unfortunate that the FDA doesn't come to these conclusions before all these people get hurt.''

"The meetings continue today, but the panel already appeared to be heavily in support of an FDA plan to reclassify all vaginal mesh as Class III devices, so that medical device makers cannot fast-track approval of the devices and will have to do detailed clinical trials before being allowed to put them on the market. However, that plan would allow existing products to remain on the market.

The pelvic organ prolapse surgical mesh products, which are implanted through the vagina, are currently considered a Class II medical device, which means that manufacturers can apply for approval through the FDA’s 510(k) approval process. That process only requires that a manufacturer show that the device is “substantially equivalent” to an existing device on the market, without requiring preclinical testing. "
