" The Transvaginal mesh implants are causing serious physical and psychological effects that are changing womens lives. Many women cannot have sexual intercourse as a result of this mesh implant procedure which can effect the stability of a marriage." Men are sueing for lack of consortorium. One woman told us that she and her husband are going to counseling due to rage fits from the mesh's psychological effects. Others are re-prolapsing and cannot take part in everyday activities we tend to take for granted. Many women are bleeding on a daily basis. Women in their late 70's are experiencing complications. Recovery at that age is slow. The following are problems linked to transvaginal mesh:
Mesh erosion through the vaginal wall
Organ perforation, abdomen and bowel
Pain during sexual intercourse
Urinary problems, incontinence and leakage
In a recent FDA meeting women spoke about their vaginal mesh complications:The FDA panel heard from several patients who said they had been harmed by the devices and the testimony was ghastly with extreme life altering complications.
“The mesh shrank 30% and eroded into the vaginal wall,” said Janet Holt. “Each step you take rubs the open wound against the other side. It is complete torture.”
Marian Goldberg, another mesh surgery patient, asked the panelists if they would agree to have the procedure using a device “that can make it impossible for you to work or to have sexual intercourse at all?” Who among you will volunteer for a permanently implanted device that cuts through your genitalia, your urethra, or your rectum? I don’t see anyone rushing to sign up on dotted line … Why haven’t you taken these products off the market?”
There have also been reports from Oregon women of recurring prolapse, vaginal scarring, vaginal shrinkage, and psychological problems related to the vaginal mesh. These complications often result in a patient requiring additional treatment, including surgery and further hospitalization.
The Transvaginal mesh was a good concept to help keep the organs in place. However, the transvaginal mesh harmed more than it helped. Some women who had the vaginal mesh surgery have reported "painful sexual intercourse, infections, urinary problems, overall discomfort, and bleeding, This happens when the mesh erodes through the stitched tissue or from skin contracting tightly around it." Last year, 75,000 women had this form of corrective surgery, and in the past two years, adverse reports to the FDA have quintupled.
The FDA has also received reports that three women died in connection with the vaginal mesh surgery, and several other women are suing the device makers. One of the transvaginal mesh lawyers, who represents 75 patients, told the Globe, "It is unfortunate that the FDA came to these conclusions after all these people get hurt.'' Conclusions being awareness of the complications
