 Prolapse is the movement  of the bladder, uterus, small bowel or rectum into the canal. Often a “bulge” is seen or can be felt on examination.  Prolapse is the result of childbirth,hysterectomy, the natural aging process,menopause, injury to the pelvic floor or perforation of the vaginal wall.

Types of Prolapse

  • Complete  Prolapse, procidentia is an extension of the entire female organ thru the pelvic canal
  • Uterine Prolapse is a bulging of the uterus into or through
  • Vaginal Vault Prolapse is a bulge of the top into the lower portion of the canal or through the  wall totally inverting it. This occurs primarily in post-hysterectomy patients.
  • Cystocele is a extension of the bladder outward into or through the pelvic wall
  • Rectocele is a bulging of the rectum
  • Enterocele is a protrusion of bowel into or outward
  • Urethroceleis is an extension of the urethra

During pelvic organ prolapse, the pelvic organs such as the bladder, uterus, and bowel drop from their normal position and “prolapse” or protrude. This is due to a weakening of the pelvic floor muscle or damage to the pelvic floor.
